Journal Entry #6

Write a one-page reflection (double-spaced) on what you did this week (4/25) at your internship. It needs to be creative and interesting for teachers and mentors to read. We do not want to know how long you sat at a desk or what you ate
for lunch.

Well this wed. was really busy and it just seem like some of the teacher where really tired and wanted to go home. I started to go to the lower class for the day because they needed some help. Then when I walked in the class room they where playing with shaving cream with some coloring. I was really surprised and they seemed to like it. At first I was thinking are they going to throw it every where? But then I was realizing they didn’t and they really liked it and seemed to be really enjoying them selves. Then I was just play with the kids and helping them build things and they would build things that would be fun and then after they would be like “oh I’m done” and then just tear it down to the ground. Then a teacher hurt her self in a different class room and they had less teachers there so they asked me if I could help out. I helped prepare their project which was planting tomato seeds. They where learning how to count cause they need to count how many seeds they had to put in the pot. Then they washed their hand and went out side for out door play. I played with them and chased them and chased me and stopped kids from crying even though they did all that they still had so much energy to run around after we got inside. After outdoor play I help them eat their lunch and make sure they eat their main meal so that they just don’t go straight to the cookies and snacks. Then I helped prepare nap time and then went to lunch. Then when I came back I helped make sure they are sleeping or at least resting in their beds/cots. Then it was time to leave. After that long day I felt really tired and wiped out just trying to keep up with the kids.

Isabel-Recently at my internship things seem to be a little calmer around because the dinner is over and thankfully it was a success! I was sick the week before and I had an appointment the week before that so I feel like I havn't been doing as much as I use to. However, Im still doing what I usually do (organizing files, getting things copied, working on excel, and doing other little tasks to help people out around the offie). I don't exactly recall what I did last time I was at the office but it was deffinitley something of that sort. Im getting use to the 9-5 hours and use to not spending all my money at the great places to eat for lunch! O n for sad and a little worrisome news a girl got shot on friday at one of my favorite places to eat when im at my internship, Blondies Pizza. I know that that has nothing to do with my internship but it is somewhat relevant because I enjoy Blondies and wednesdays during lunch is the only time i ever eat there. Well thats all there is to say...everything is fine or at least the same around the office. Not 2 hard not 2 easy just the same...

On Wednesday of 4/25 my group and me went to the YMCA. There we went up to the rooftop garden and water some plants while enjoying the bright sun. But before that we walked around the flea market that is always set up. They always have yummy samples out like apples, juice, cheese, and kettle corn. Its always fun to see which one is the best because you know you can always go back and get that one the next Wednesday. After the YMCA we usually go straight to Project Open Hand, which is where we volunteer in the afternoon. This was my first time there so I was pretty skeptical of what we would actually we doing cooking or doing the groceries. But its super cool because if you do volunteer you get free food. And the clients were telling me about it all day, which was cool. After we ate we finally got to work by putting crackers in separate bags to then give out to people. This was pretty tedious work but to know where it was going made me proud that I could be there to help. This is what I will be doing for he next two Wednesdays and then after this it will be my finally time and I get to pick where I want to go.

I dont realy remember what happened on 4/25 but I can describe this weeks dya wich is 5/2. So I usualy get to the school at around 8:30 but I dont actually start until 9:30, at wich the kids of the school all stand in a circle and the principle says the morning anouncements like testing girls soccer and other things like jumprope for heart and movie night. Then we take the kids in to the classroom where we do the calender. one of the students says what day and month its is in spanish and then in english then we go over the weather outside an dthe temperature and the kids write all of this down in their calender. Then we start working on papers that the teachers has copied for them on math or in spanish. Then be get out the books they have and they have to do a few pages in there about the story they read earlier on in the week. Then its lunch and I go out with the kids and sometimes I play and other times I just sit on the bench but what ever I do the Kids follow me. Then we go back in and we work on the book that they were doing about ants and why they are so amazing. Then they have another recess. Then we go back in and we sit in the rug and go over a book and then we do some math work with the whole class untill the school ends at 3:30 and the teacher leads some of the kids down and some stay up so I stay with they and I end up leving at about 4 even if my time is until 3:30.

On Wednesday the 25 it seemed to have been a little calmer then usual. I wasn’t running up to the 3rd floor and back down to the 2nd floor as much as usual. Which was actually good because every time Christine and I have to go get boxes form the 3rd floor with the big huge cart its always weird and kind of funny because the cart is very big and it makes a lot of noise when were walking down the halls and it feels like everyone is looking at us. The sometimes we can’t even drive it right and were almost crashing into things which is scary and funny at the same time, but I try not to laugh. Anyways, that day in the morning I was working on my final project. Well, that was when I finally got it open. At first I was trying to use the intern computer and as always it was so slow. I mean it took forever just to turn on. And then there were all these web pages opened and a bunch of advertisements. So then Christine was helping me to try and close them and as always it froze. And if that wasn’t enough all of the sudden a bunch of pop ups came up and started covering the entire screen, it was so weird and we didn’t know what was going on we thought it was broken or something and we got worried. But then they all went away. And we just looked at each other and were wondering what happened. So we were just like whatever and tried o open my file again and then the pop- up thing happened again. And I didn’t know what was going on. I was getting frustrated because I don’t think that computer like me because it always gives me problems. And I just didn’t know what to do. Bu then I was able to use another computer so I felt a little better but by that point I didn’t even want to work on my project anymore, so I was glad that for the rest of the day I was able to go help in the record room because I actually like doing that. I don’t mind doing it and the people in there are nice and easy to talk to so I enjoy being in there.

Argent,

Man I wasn’t here during that date, because I was out of country. But I can recall a day where I was working in my WLE, although I didn’t have to go. So that day was on my birthday, April 2nd, and I worked there for about 2-3 hours starting from 7:30 AM. As soon as I had arrived, there were already 5 kids. It seems that, much like me, when kids are tired, they get cranky. And this boy Christopher was very cranky. He’s usually very silent yet happy and plays with random toys you hand him. But this morning when I handed him a jet he made it crash land nose first to the floor. So I had to take him to a chair and let him sleep for a little. There was a new girl in town, so I checked up with her. She was shy and reluctant at first but I told her my name and she told me that her name was Ella. Then she took me to the dress up area, and made me try princess clothes. I put my leg in them but I didn’t fit. “YOU’RE TOO BIG!” she exclaimed. So I replied by telling her that she’ll just have to wear it for me. So she wore it, and became the princess and that I was her royal servant… also known as a slave. I really didn’t want to go and do this game but the 3 other kids were doing their journal with the other teacher and having 2 teachers to 3 students wouldn’t be very efficient, so I just decided to entertain myself with her slave game. She’d basically sit down and ask for something and then I have to go get it, until she declared it was teatime. So with teatime around we sat on chairs and drank tea and I goofed off and made her laugh by saying, “do you drink out of your ears?” while I tilted the cup to drain the imaginary tea into my ear. “NOO,” she said with laughter. Then more kids came in, and then we had time to play outside. Which is somewhat annoying because I like the fresh air and the freedom to be active with the kids. But I’m chained to an eternal freeze tag game where I am continuously “it.” Chasing kids and being alert at the same time is tiring so I usually just kind of leave mid game sometimes to help other children who are alone. Then I had to leave because I had to meet some friends.

In my WLE I now help coach a flag football team. There are two teams which is a sixth grade team and and a 8th grade team. I mostly help with the sixth grade team. Most of the kids on the team played football for a football program named Pop warner. So it wasn’t that hard for them to understand the drills and plays. The Pop warner foundation is a football league for kids between the grade levels of 1st grade and 8th grade. There are different levels of the football so it can keep it organized and fair. Because it wouldn’t be to fair if a 8th grader lined up on the line with a 1st grader. So the levels are mighty mites, peewees, junior peewees, midgets, and junior midgets. And these different levels play tackle football with pads and equipment with teams all over the bay area and city. I played with pop warner teams when I was in about the 2nd or 3rd grade.
Our sixth grade flag football team has loosen twice and won one game which make their record 1 & 2. Our 8th grade team is 2 & 1. Both 8th and 6th grade teams have games on Fridays at krocker park near sunnydale. They hotdogs and chips at the games to help raise money for the league. I go to the games after school on Fridays.

I usually don’t say much in the woodshop or in the museum just because there is so much to take in. It would kind of be impossible to correctly describe the people around me. Seperately, I feel like I have been eavesdropping for three months. This week I got trained on a new piece of machinery, the drill press. That’s fun too, I guess. I like using the other saw more.
Sometimes I get really frustrated with my inability to do a ton of things, but the only way to learn is to have the willingness to do something different.
I need to learn a new card trick soon. I have like, one, and I use it way too much. The only reason I use it is because it is the easiest to remember. But that’s true for children too, and they tend to call me out/have a much better card trick than me. This one kid pulled a quarter out of my ear like two dozen times. This Wednesday morning I printed out some other card tricks a few minutes before I had to leave my house, and I didn’t really have a chance to read them until lunch break. That’s when I found out that they were tricks for a Christian camp and like the dialogue and hand motions in the tricks were extremely religious.
My favorite thing to do is the drawing board. Its design is kind of an opposite pendulum, the needle (marker) stays stationary and the platform with a blank sheet of paper is manipulated by the child/overbearing parent into the shape they desire. People get really feisty in line.

I was not at my internship today because my mentor, Aditi, had to work outside of the office so she cancelled WLE for the week. She left me a message on my phone ahead of time so it didn't come as a surprise.
